JUNETEENTH + HOLLAND

Juneteenth is a holiday that commemorates the day in 1865 when the enslaved people of Texas finally learned that slavery had been abolished and that they were free. While Michigan recognized Juneteenth as a holiday in 2005, we in Holland have been celebrating the history of Juneteenth since 2000!

Come shop from over 70 vendors, food trucks, makers, artists, crafters, and hobbyists. Let your kids play in one of our large inflatables and grab a free balloon animal while visiting the vendors for more activities. 

Don’t forget! Bring your chairs and blankets to enjoy a program from our students and community. Then get ready for a night of music provided by PJ DA DJ! great and stepping to a few classic in the park.

THE WHO: I AM Academy’s theme this year is “I AM the Dream,” which focuses on helping our students see and achieve their goals! “I AM the Dream celebrates these successes and highlights the importance of acknowledging accomplishments, whether big or small. 

THE WHEN: On June 15, we invite you to join us for a vibrant celebration of freedom, culture, and dreamers at the Juneteenth Freedom Festival at Kollen Park!
 
THE WHAT: Experience the rhythm of live music, the flavors of delicious food, and the joy of community as we commemorate Juneteenth together! Let’s honor history, celebrate resilience, and embrace the spirit of Juneteenth!
 
Bring your friends, family, and neighbors for a day of fun, learning, and togetherness! 
 
THE WHY: In essence, our name, I AM Academy, is a placeholder for a powerful yearly mantra, “I AM…”. This year’s theme, “I AM the Dream,” promotes self-confidence, goal-setting, resilience, and the belief that everyone deserves to create the life they desire. 

All funds raised will help us continue providing representation, mentorship, and opportunities for our Black and multiracial youth in the West Michigan area and allow us to offer student scholarships for over 20 local youth to attend our annual Summer College Tour!

HISTORY TALK WITH ROBERT SHIPLEY

Join us at Hope College for an engaging History Talk with Robert Shipley on the rich and diverse history of music. Explore the evolution, influence, and the cultural impact. This event promises insightful discussions and a deeper appreciation for the art form that has shaped societies worldwide.

ABOUT ROBERT SHIPLEY:

Born and raised in Chicago, Robert started studying drums at the age of 10, starting a band with twin brother, Richard, who plays bass. They had a soundproof studio built by their father, Charles Shipley, who was a recording engineer.

In 1979 he started touring the world with blues bands such as Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, who he recorded on Gatemouth’s Grammy-winning album (Best Blues Artist) in 1981. After moving to Los Angeles in 1982 he began touring with Natalie Cole 1983-1989, Diana Ross 1989, The Temptations 1989-1990, The O’Jays 1990-2002, Chaka Khan 1995-1998, and isolated dates with artist such as Stephanie Mills, R. Kelly, Gerald Levert, Yolanda Adams, The Main Ingredient, Ben Vereen, Evelyn King, The Emotions, The S.O.S. Band, Jody Whatley and many more.

Robert Shipley is currently the director of Jazz Studies at Hope College, a tenure-track position he proudly accepted July 1, 2021. 

He is also the author of the drum method book, The Art of Commercial Drumming.
